fjk090852-7 wrote: Mon Apr 21, 2025 3:26 pm I heard a comment over the weekend that Nutting is deliberately holding back team payroll because his intention is to move the team by 2030 to Charlotte NC. This could be a possibility regarding the future of the Pirates.
It shouldn't surprise anyone that he's at least looked into the possibility of moving the team. He doesn't care about the history, or the attachment to the city since 1883. (That's the actual first year of the franchise. It was in 1887 the teamed moved from the American Association to the National League. The team's been in existence since 1883 but, for some reason, the current ownership won't acknowledge that.) If he can make even a little more money he'll be packed up and ready to go at a moment's notice.
If that would happen it would be a very sad day for Pittsburgh, and for Major League Baseball. I can really see him moving the team from Pittsburgh.
another reason to hope he is gone long before 2030. Yesterday isn't soon enough.

Question: Bob has talked about turning the team over to his daughters eventually. Does anyone know if any of them play a role with the team? I saw an old article indicating they'd be late 20s or 30s now.

I do believe they will be gone once the lease is up. It will be extremely sad for many Pirate fans. Outside of those who love the Bucs not many will care. MLB is all about the dollar as are all Pro sports. Sad indeed.

I seriously doubt that MLB would allow the Pirates to move. If they did I am almost positive that it would follow the example of the Browns moving to Baltimore. In other words, the franchise would move but the name and colors would remain and Pittsburgh would be awarded a new franchise with an owner that is financially able and willing to support a Major League team.

I’d prefer that Nutting be awarded a new franchise in the city to which he’d move the Pirates, and the Pirates stay right here and get a new owner. Moving the Pirates, but giving them a new name, doesn’t mean they cede the team’s history. It would go with them, regardless of what their new name would be. As a fan of the franchise, I’d really hate that.

I doubt they allow the team to move but for the reason they want the prime cities available to sell to extension buyers. If the Pirates move, MLB gets nothing; if an expansion team gets the new city, MLB gets one billion plus to divide up.

That depends on the agreement on moving. When the Baltimore Colts literally snuck out of town in the middle of the night (fans, media, mayor and governor were shocked to wake up and find moving vans taking the team's possessions to Indianapolis), the records went with them. The Indy Colts count Peyton Manning and Johnny Unitas as their 2 greatest QBs. But when the Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens, the old Browns records stayed behind. Jim Brown's records do not apply to the Ravens. They apply to the new Browns. If the Pirates moved, I believe the records would stay behind.

If that's what would happen, in my view, I personally wouldn't regard those records as belonging to the "new" Pirates. It would be an entirely different entity in my mind and I'm sure I wouldn't have an emotional attachment to the new team like I have with the current team. I'm not sure how much I'd even pay attention to baseball anymore if Nutting took the Pirates away.

The Washington Nationals include the Monrreal Expos (from whence they came) stats/records as their own but do not count the old Washington Senators stats/records. There doesn't seem to be a standard for these things.

For team honors and such, they draw from everything that touched DC baseball - Expos, Homestead Grays, and both Senators teams.
