WASHINGTON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Washington Nationals center fielder Nyjer Morgan(notes) has been suspended seven games and fined for intentionally throwing a baseball into the stands and hitting a fan. Major League Baseball did not disclose the amount of the fine for the incident which took place during the middle of the ninth inning of the team’s game in Philadelphia last weekend. Morgan was scheduled to begin the suspension on Wednesday but appealed and played in the Nationals’ loss to the Chicago Cubs. “I have to just wait for my appeal process and, as far as I know, I’ll just take it from there,” Morgan told the Nationals’ website ( http://washington.nationals.mlb.com). “I can’t really say too much.” (Writing by Gene Cherry in Raleigh, North Carolina; Editing by Frank Pingue; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com) http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Aq_63DFkYRiA9FCFnShQ5iuFCLcF?slug=reu-nationalsmorgan

Tony plush has not had an RBI since late July. This is 68 abs. This has got to be some sort of record. I don't care how many bases Nyjer steals, we own this trade.

Anyone else feel that Morgan shouldn't be suspended? This sounds like typical Morgan, doing the back and forth with fans, then lobbing a ball that accidentally hits someone. There was a report from a Phillies fan that said just that.

As soon as I read the story, I said to myself, "That doesn't sound like Nyjer Morgan." He always seems to be fooling around with fans - even ones that are giving him a hard time. I didn't see the act in question, but I don't think Nyjer Morgan would throw a ball at a fan in a deliberate attempt to hit them with it.

His intent doesn't matter. If he injured a fan throwing a ball into the stands, he deserves to be suspended. Doesn't matter if he lobbed it or reared back and let it fly. Players aren't supposed to throw the ball into the stands for just that reason.

Someone should tell this to nearly every outfielder in the game then.

I agree that it sounds like an overblown case but, and it's a big but, Morgan should have never forgotten that he was in Philly. This is the same "crowd" that cheered when Strasburg left the game and pelts Santa Claus with batteries and snowballs.

Perhaps MLB felt it had to take a stand in this case because the incident happened in Philadelphia. It just reminds the players that they should not attempt to harm any obnoxious Philadelphia fans since, well, the majority of Philly fans are obnoxious. Philly home games would turn into ball-give-away nights if opponents believed they had a risk-free option to take the revenge.

There's a huge difference between what Morgan is accused of, and what he actually did. Lobbing a ball in to the stands when people are asking for a ball isn't wrong. If everyone fails to catch it, and it hits someone who wasn't looking, that's not Morgan's fault. Now if Morgan throws the ball with intent to hit someone, that's a different story.

Someone should tell this to nearly every outfielder in the game then. Plus bullpen guys who warm up the outfielders between innings. Plus whatever fielder catches the last out at the end of an inning. Plus everyone on the team during fielding practice before the game.

A person was injured and you want it to be no ones fault. He hit a guy in the temple with the ball. The guy was not looking for a souvenir when it happened, he had his head turned and was looking at the scoreboard. No one else threw the ball and it didn't just jump into the stands under its own power. Nyjer is the only one to blame. Of course you might also say the souvenir hungry fans are responsible as well, but they didn't throw it.

Apparently some fans were heckling Nyjer, he threw the ball at the hecklers and ended up hitting a guy who was minding his own business and not paying attention to the whole thing. That's what is alleged, anyway. If true, it's serious business, he could have really injured someone.

I doubt that story because the punishment would be much more severe.
