Who would've thunk this from watching games and checking the boxscores,Dejans prediction for the 5th outfield spot...
<<<<<Brandon Moss, despite his 0-for-16 start, probably will be the other. Moss is out of options, and his competition, Rule 5 draft pick John Raynor, has not impressed management commensurate with his .444 average here.>>>>

If the team's giving Kratz a shot at the backup catcher job shouldn't they have at least brought him to camp with them to get a few ABs in and work with the pitchers?

For some reason Kratz's stats arent listed on the mlb site but he has played at least 2 games. I believe he has 5 AB's plus he caught the Manatees game which isnt included in the stats. It surprises me theyre considering him over Carlin who is superior defensively, has major league experience and hit AAA pitching better last year than Kratz

Talk of Chulck, Taschner and Bass making the bullpen out of spring training is a lot scarier to me than Moss as a reserve oufielder or Kratz over Jamarillo.
I know Hanrahan is ailing, but I've got to believe there is someone out there who is better than the above options.

Chulk isn't that bad, and apparently Taschner changed his arm angle and it has worked wonders thus far.

Chulk looked surprisingly good yesterday. I don't mind a whole lot of these guys being mentioned when we are talking about the #6 & #7 guys out of the bullpen. As NH likes to say they are fungible.
I guess you should never make decisions based upon spring training stats, but I would be dissapointed if Moss makes it over Traynor.

While the Incredible Chulk wouldn't have been my first choice, I don't think there's anything wrong with him winning a middle relief job.

I remember him in a couple of games in the last week or so. It's funny...I checked the NRI list a week or so ago. He was listed then. Last night, his name was missing...then it's back on there again this morning. I don't know about Carlin providing ANY offense. Looking at his minor league numbers...he seems to be real good at taking a walk...but his AAA numbers from last season SCREAM outlier (Reno is at 5000+ feet altitude).

Can someone please explain the rationale for starting Jaramillo in Class AAA?
The guy is a pretty solid backup and isn't exactly some prospect that needs extra seasoning. Putting Kratz on the opening day roster makes the Pirates a weaker team.

I'll take a shot, but first let me qualify that I don't agree with any of this logic by the Pirates.... 1. Doumit will get hurt, so Jaramillo will be the starter in AAA when he gets called up....not rusty. 2. He has options left, so they may as well use them. 3. They can game his service time clock and potentially get another pre-arb year out of him Most of you know my thoughts on service time clocks, especially for non-key players, so again that is not my rationale...just what the Pirates may be thinking.

I don't buy any of those reasons..... 1. Doumit got hurt last year Jaramillo played fine in his absence 2. This is completely a non issue 3. He's a backup catcher...who cares I don't believe this is even an issue because Kratz would have to be added to the 40 man roster

There will be at least one spot when Ascanio goes on the 60 day DL. And you can probably figure at least one or two more...like Vazquez getting released.
