Bama SS Rutledge could move up in draft

Perhaps the best matchup on Wednesday night took place in Birmingham, where Alabama hosted Georgia. Shortstop Josh Rutledge, potentially an early-round selection this June, went two-for-four with a double and two stolen bases. Second baseman Ross Wilson, possibly a Top-100 pick in his own right, singled and walked twice to improve his numbers to .381/.519/.429 on the season.

Rutledge is the prospect to watch at Alabama, however, as the 6-foot, 185-pounder looks to prove he can play shortstop and provide offense that does more than fit the profile. He's batting .360/.400/.560 on the year and is coming off a sophomore campaign in which he hit .305/.396/.444 with 21 extra-base hits.

"Physically, the skills are present for him to hit enough for the big leagues," an AL area scout said, drawing thoughts from his preseason notes. "Ideally this year he'll prove the power -- maybe even show more strength, get a little more power out of that swing. I can see him staying up the middle; I really think he stays at short, he can play there."

Elsewhere ...

• James Madison closer Kevin Munson gave up an unearned run on two hits Wednesday, added a strikeout and still boasts the triple-doughnut for an ERA. He's walked two and fanned three in 3 1/3 innings, and all three hits off him are singles.

• Clemson outfielder Kyle Parker, a bat we haven't mentioned yet this season, had three hits Wednesday, including his fourth home run of the season. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-handed hitter enters Friday's matchup with South Carolina -- where he will face Gamecocks junior right-hander Sam Dyson -- with a line of .464/.531/.893. He's drawn just three walks but has also struck out on just four occasions, showing an improved ability to make contact after whiffing in 19 percent of his plate appearances a year ago.

• Middle Tennessee State star Bryce Brentz had two singles and two strikeouts versus Southern Illinois and sports a .955 OPS with four extra-base hits in seven games. He's yet to homer, however, and since he doesn't play the toughest of schedules in the Sun Belt Conference, scouts want to see him dominate.

• Auburn first baseman Hunter Morris went 2-for-7 with two strikeouts Wednesday and enters play this weekend hitting .351/.368/.486 but without a long ball or a walk. That's not going to get him drafted on Day 1.

• Looking to Thursday's actions, right-hander Cole Cook, a sophomore-eligible at Pepperdine, will start Game 1 at LSU with southpaw Matt Bywater getting the nod in Game 3 on Saturday. Tigers bats Micah Gibbs and Leon Landry will get a nice test versus a fellow draft prospect in the opener, which is always interesting and useful for scouts.

• Oregon State brings right-handers Kevin Rhoderick and Greg Peavey to Cal-Riverside, where catcher Rob Brantly will look to improve his 1.129 OPS versus some strong competition.

As a Pirates(that's right the Pirates!)fan I know this will be the 18th straight season of below .500 so do you think they will lose 100 this season and any idea whom the Bucs may take with the 2nd pick in the draft?

I would have said Ranaudo a week or so ago, but with him out, it could be Deck McGuire, and I've heard them as one of a few teams in love with Chris Sale (who doesn't belong anywhere that high). Maybe I should say "in like" since it's still 3 months from the draft.

isn't that the "shoulda taken Wieters over Moskos"...wait wait. the "shoulda taken ANYONE over Moskos"....

Pretty much. They had Matt Dominguez in Pittsburgh for a workout a few days before the draft. He put on a show by all accounts. And they still didn't take him.

Any HS pos player look like a top 5 to you? Even top 10? Doesn't look like a great year on that front.

Agreed, it's not a great year for bats period. Could see Wilson or Josh Sale jump up that high, or maybe Manny Machado.

How did Jason Heyward slip through the draft cracks all the way to Atlanta?
Jim Callis
  (2:34 PM)

It didn't make a lot of sense at the time. But he has such a patient eye at the plate and was pitched around so much in HS that a lot of scouting directors who went in to see him didn't get a great look at what he can do. And when they're taking a guy that high in the draft, they want to know (rather than believe) that he can rake. The Braves, who had watched Heyward for years at the East Cobb complex, were the beneficiaries and stole him at No. 14. The team that should have taken him was the Pirates, who passed on Matt Wieters because of his price tag. Scouting director Ed Creech lived in Georgia and the Pirates needed an impact bat, but they took Daniel Moskos. Ouch.

I really want to make that Clemson USC game, but it does not look good for me.  Kyle Parker was the QB for the clemson football team, until he decided to go with baseball.  He was at 3B previously.

As much as I'd love for a guy from my alma mater to be drafted high, I don't understand the idea of picking college closers in the first round.  Unless someone sees something that makes them think that they can be converted into a quality starting pitcher, I just don't get it.  I guess the one benefit is that they probably won't have their arm ragged out to the extent that college starting pitchers do.

DL thought it was a good idea...

I could see the Chris Sale pick.  Tall LH with very good control.  It doesn't necessarily get me excited, but I could see why they would do it.

Yeah, and we've always done so well with college pitchers.

FWIW, not that I want them to draft Sale, BA ranked him the best prospect in the Cape Cod League.  They currently have him eighth among draft prospects, behind Harper, three college pitchers and three HS pitchers.  (NH is not going to take a HS pitcher with an early first round pick.  I think that's etched in stone.)  PG Crosschecker ranks him 4th among college prospects, one spot higher than BA.

The writeup from the Cape Cod League:

Quote
1. Chris Sale, lhp, Yarmouth-Dennis (Jr., Florida Gulf Coast)

Sale won the Cape's pitcher of the year award after tying for the league lead with four victories and topping the Cape with 57 strikeouts and 55 innings. He was also the East Division's MVP at the all-star game, where he required just six pitches to work a perfect inning.

Sale has a lean 6-foot-6, 185-pound frame and comes at hitters from a low arm slot. His fastball sits at 90-93 mph, features good life and should continue to add velocity as he fills out. His changeup gives him an effective weapon against righthanders, while his breaking ball needs refinement.

"He throws strikes from a low-three-quarters angle and makes it difficult on guys," an American League scouting director said. "I saw him up to 95 in the all-star game, and he showed me he can command three pitches."

Picture of Sale at this link--definitely suggests a low-arm slot:

Harper does his first interview, his comments about his draft status sound Boras spoon-fed and I think I can safely say, unless he comes out soon with a definite statement about his draft status, that he wont be picked by the Bucs. Not even sure the Nats would potentially waste a pick when a kid says something like that....maybe its part of a ploy to drop to a high profile team

That would be my guess.

Yeah, and we've always done so well with college pitchers.

Especially ones without a high-end ceiling.

Scout to Cook: Pick either slider or slurve

Scouts liked what they saw from Pepperdine right-hander Cole Cook against unbeaten and No. 1 LSU, but there are still big questions about him. A sophomore-eligible, Cook went seven strong innings, yielding three earned runs on seven hits and a walk. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Los Angeles native racked up nine strikeouts along the way.

"He was aggressive," an NL club's area scout said. "This was a nice test and he didn't back down. I had him in the low-90s for much of the game, and by my count his last fastball there (in the seventh inning) was 92. But the key for him was the split, it was very effective. And he was much better at avoid the middle of the plate, and for the most part kept the ball in the lower half of the zone."

Cole touched 94 mph Thursday and his final fastball came in at 92. But the righty has had problems in the past sustaining velocity into the later innings, often dipping down into the high-80s, according to another scout in attendance.

"Better, I'd say, and maybe that's a matter of how early in the season it was for him," the scout said. "And the slider hints at being a good pitch for him down the road, but the few I saw tonight weren't major league pitches."

Cook has been known to mix in two breaking balls: a true slider that sits in the upper-70s, and a bigger, slower slurve-like offering. "Pick one and go with it -- and I'd prefer he transitions (into throwing) the curveball," the NL scout said, pointing out that if he's going to throw a split-finger rather than a traditional changeup, the curveball is a better complement.

LSU's top prospects, Micah Gibbs and Leon Landry, reached base three times and scored three runs, with Gibbs going 2-for-4 to raise his season line to .400/.455/.667 for the season.

Cook is 0-2 on the season, but has allowed just seven earned runs in 21 frames, and has posted a solid 18-5 K/BB ratio. Of the 19 hits he has allowed, only two have gone for extra bases.

Elsewhere ...

# UC-Riverside catcher Rob Brantly went 1-for-3 and Oregon State first baseman Stefen Romero went 1-for-4 in the Beavers 10-3 win at home Thursday. Romero has gotten some attention early this season, partly due to his strong start. The right-handed hitting junior enters play this weekend hitting .333/.459/.733 with three doubles, three homers and a 5-5 K/BB ratio. Brantly is now hitting .364/.436/.667 and is showing scouts he's a legit backstop, too. Keith Law has a report on him here.

# San Diego State right-hander Addison Reed out-dueled Kentucky's Alex Meyer, a prospect to keep an eye on for 2011, striking out six in six innings, surrendering two runs on six hits and a walk. Reed continued to keep the ball down, yielding eight groundball outs to just two fly ball outs. Again, Reed isn't going to wow with velocity, so his command, pitch mix and consistency will carry him.

# Reed's teammate, centerfielder Corey Vaughn, went 2-for-5 with a double and two strikeouts, and now boasts a concerning 1/13 BB/K ratio. He has just three extra-base hits in 40 official at-bats.

# Jameson Taillon fanned 10 and touched 97 mph on the radar gun Thursday, allowing just three hits in a 2-0 loss to Moody High School. The consensus among three of the several scouts in attendance was that Taillon was "good, again, but he'll be better."

# Right-hander Dylan Covey and his Maranatha HS (Pasadena, Calif.) teammates get under way tonight against Newbury Park. Covey is considered a near-lock as a first-round pick, and could push for the Top 10.

# Archbishop McCarthy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) star Nick Castellanos had two hits in a 16-2 win Thursday. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound third baseman has hits in each of the Mavericks first six games, including three doubles and a home run.

# If you're looking for some matchups to check out Friday night, it's a full slate of games all weekend, with several solid faceoffs, Florida State vs. Georgia and Texas vs. Rice. In these two games tonight, we'll see Bulldogs RHP Justin Grimm against FSU CF Tyler Holt, and Rice's Rick Hague and 2011 prospect Anthony Rendon will see Texas' own top prospect for next spring, Taylor Jungmann.

# Texas Tech RHP Chad Bettis will face TCU and South Carolina's Sam Dyson faces Kyle Parker and Clemson. Arkansas takes their three prospects to Berkely to face RHP Dixon Anderson and California. If Anderson throws well, he could become more than just an arm in the first-day conversation.

# If he's focused, Ohio State RHP Alex Wimmers could put up a fun line versus Duquesne Friday. It won't mean much in terms of his stock and status necessarily, but it might be fun to look at tomorrow morning.
